CARTIF

CARTIF

Fundación CARTIF is a leading Spanish Applied Research Centre in terms of R&D and technology transfer activities, established as a Foundation (private non-profit research centre). Its mission is to offer innovative solutions to companies to improve their processes, systems and products, improving their competitiveness and creating new business opportunities. In 2019, CARTIF carried out over 50 R&D and innovation projects, with a turnover of approximately 10,2 M€. Nowadays CARTIF is formed up by 176 people distributed in 3 technical divisions, including Agro-food and Processes. One of the aims of this division is to use waste or by-product streams to exploit their potential as raw materials for bioenergy, biopolymers and bio-products. CARTIF participation in international activities has been materialized in the current participation in 61 on-going international projects, including 37 H2020 (7 of them coordinated) and 11 LIFE projects (5 of them coordinated). In addition, CARTIF takes an active part in several national and international networks and platforms such as the SPIRE PPP, Bio-Based Industries Consortium, Factories of the Future, EIP on Raw Materials or EIP on Agriculture.

Role in BioSFerA

CARTIF leads the WP3, which includes the lab scale optimisation of the gas fermentation process from CO2/CO/H2 to acetate, as well as the aerobic fermentation process of acetate to TAGs. During the first stage (CO2/CO/H2 transformation into acetate by acetogenic bacteria), different metabolically engineered strains will be tested in terms of yield, productivity and titer of acetate. The influence of syngas contaminants and process parameters on the gas fermentation will be also evaluated. A similar strategy will be applied to optimize the second stage (production of TAGs from acetate), employing suitable metabolically engineered oleaginous yeasts. Aerobic fermentation tests will be performed, optimising critical process parameters involved in the growth and productivity of yeasts.
