Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant

BIO BASE

Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant is an independent, state-of-the-art and multipurpose pilot facility for process development, scale-up and custom manufacturing of bio-based products and processes from kilogram to multi-ton scale.
A wide range of modular unit operations combined with a team of flexible, highly trained and experienced engineers and bioprocess technicians serves customers from around the world in the field of biomass pretreatment, (gas)fermentation, biocatalysis, explosion proof green chemistry and purification and product recovery.
BBEPP has extensive expertise in the production of e.g. industrial enzymes, speciality carbohydrates, bio-surfactants, organic acids, monomers, solvents, flavors and fragrances, biopolymers, food grade ingredients, oleo-chemicals and fuels… and this from various biomass feed stocks.
From 2013 to 2019, Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant successfully conducted 322 bilateral (private) projects with 124 different small, medium and large sized companies. On top of these private/bilateral projects, Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant was involved in more than 45 public project consortia.

Role in BioSFerA

BBEPP is responsible for the scale-up of the gas fermentation process from CO/CO2/H2 to acetic acid, as well as the subsequent fermentative conversion of acetic acid to TAGs, bringing the optimized fermentation process to TRL 5.

This includes:

  • design and validation of the microbial conversionof CO2/CO/H2 to acetic acid;
  • assessment of the influence of process parameters and contaminantson the gas fermentation process;
  • optimizationof the production of TAGs from the obtained acetic acid at pilot scale;
  • demonstrationof the gas fermentation on site of the syngas producer by using a mobile unit containing all required apparatus;
  • scale-upconversion of acetate to TAGs and downstream purification strategy using industrially relevant and scalable equipment;
  • collect and provide process data to the downstream partners for a techno-economic and life cycle assessment.
